Websites Meta Elements - Still Playing Vital Roles!

Meta-tags

Meta-tags are text, which is typed in the HEAD section of a particular Website. This part of your site does not appear in the browser so is not normally seen by your site visitors and the surfers. They should contain the following information:-

1) The name of your website i.e how you "address your Website" or most accurately, how you express your business and brand.

2) A description of your site's content.

3) Keywords and keyword phrases. This is important to facilitate user's queries.

If you fail to enter the above mentioned, and it is amazing how many sites don't have then if and when a spider finds your site it will probably index the first 25 words of the text that are not in the frame.

Source from WIKIPEDIA

"Meta elements are HTML or XHTML elements used to provide structured metadata about a web page. Such elements must be placed as tags in the head section of an HTML or XHTML document. Meta elements can be used to specify page description, keywords and any other metadata not provided through the other head elements and attributes."

META-TAGS BEST PRACTICES.

(A) TITLE META TAGS

The Title is perhaps the most important meta tag. The content in the Title tag appears:
1) as the document title in search results
2) as the "Bookmark" or "Favorites" description.

Best Practices
. Each page of your website should have a unique title. For large documents that are composed of several Web pages, differentiate the Title tag on these pages by associating additional subsection text.
. Do not exceed 100 characters. Keep the title as short as possible.
. Use text that is similar to the title of the documents.
. Make sure the TITLE contains words a user may use to search for that page.

(B) DESCRIPTION META TAGS

Website's DESCRIPTION tag summarizes the page content and accurately describe the intent and value of the document.

Best Practices
. Use capitalization, punctuation, and grammar in the same way you would in the content body of the web page.
. The description must be relevant to the content on the page.
. The description text for HTML pages can be virtually any length, although the search engine will only display the contents of the Description tag under certain circumstances. It will only the first +/- 150 characters will display.
. Each web page description should be unique.

NOTE: If there is no DESCRIPTION tag and a particular search engine requires one, the engines will usually display the first 150 characters of the page content.

(C) KEYWORDS META TAGS

The keywords tag provide additional text for the Search Engines crawler to index along with the website body content. It is used in the indexing process but will not display on the web page.

Best Practices
. All keywords should be contextually relevant for the body page and should not be duplicate across other page.
. The more keywords you have, the more you will have to divert the Search Engines "attention" of your web importance.
. Tailored made your keywords sets for each individual page. Do not use the same keywords sets on multiple page.
. Localize your keyword tag in the same document, except for product name or others special industries terms.
. Keyword Research is important, it decides how users or your prospects to find your online stores or websites.
